I have a bunch of new pots out of the bisque and am trying to get them glazed tonight so that I can get an early start at Raku in the morning. I am hoping to fire 4 or 5 cycles, lots of new flower pots for the Farmer's Market on Saturday. The bad thing about my glazes is that I brush them all on and the pots all get three coats. Very time consuming, I much prefer the dipping method.
I started making some little round vases for my upcoming workshop at Penland. They were very generic round vases and very boring. So I started stacking them on top of each other and came up with these two. The others didn't work so well and I over worked them until they died a sad death. The one on the left has little rams on it and the one on the right has sprigs all around. I kinda like them, they're silly and they make me smile. I guess I should make some more serious pots for the workshop just so I don't embarrass myself too much. Hopefully some photo worthy pots will be out tomorrow.

hi... I wonder if these can hold liquids. I thought raku didn't hold liquids, but I've done a little bit of raku and have friends who want raku functional pieces! Any insight?
I love your vases! I think flowers look best in vases that make you smile.
Do you brush your glazes on because of the quantity of glaze -not enough mixed to dip -- or because the glaze calls for brushing?
I hate dipping & pouring - I seem to have more control brushing, but it is time consuming!
Hi Amy: No these won't hold liquids, just dried flowers or maybe a glass jar placed inside, not that one would fit inside these. Judy, quite honestly I'm not sure why I am brushing these glazes on, they are recipes that we had at CM and they are brushing consistency. I should check into that, I have just always brushed them and get good results. Although, I did spray on a pipenburg glaze with that vase I submitted for 500 Vases and it turned out great. Maybe I could dip them, hmmmm.....
nice lookin' vases Trace! have a great firing today.
No need to be embarrassed about those, I just love the whimsey of them and I see you made some more of your favorite one in the background.
I know florists often carry plastic liners for some pots, wonder if you could get a narrow plastic liner for these - that might be a good marketing technique for raku - hey I just gave myself an idea for my barrel fired stuff.
I brush most of my glazes too. One of these days I'll have a favorite glaze I'll dip, maybe clear to go over all my slip deco? Ha!
