New homes for my houses

Finished up these pendants today and got the houses out of firing number three. All good, no casualties! They are off to their new homes at the NC Craft Gallery and the Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh. I will be sad to see them go, I have grown rather fond of them, they have been around here it seems like forever!

Michael Mahan asked about black oxide at ^04 and here it is, above, brushed on and wiped off below brushed on and very lightly wiped. This is on Campbells brick red. The stain holds up pretty well and I like the look a lot although it should be for decorative only, I think that eventually with a lot of washings the oxide will wear off. The chrome oxide was rubbing off of the tile so I'll just use the chrome terra sig which is really nice and then if Iwant it more aged, I'll put some black oxide over it. I like the looks of the tile below a lot.

At Chico State we add a low fire frit to the stain, 50/50, to give it some flux. Have you tried that?

Your house pendants are so cool! I want to live in that wonderful little village :)

I'd say work the house idea as long as you want to, see where it takes you. They're really great.

Tracey -- your hard work has definitely paid off. The pendants & the village look great. No wonder you are so happy -- it looks like you've achieved that 'raku look' you love with the stains - so now your body of work will definitely be cohesive.
I don't think you will be bored any time soon -- you have so many fabulous choices with that palette!

I love the look of that last tile too. When I've used black iron oxide as a stain, I didn't like the way it behaved when I wiped it off. Seems too fluffy or something. Doesn't want to stick to the clay, and then when fired it's too dry. Does that last tile have black iron on it?

Tracey Broome said...

Micheal, yes the last tile is black iron oxide, a pretty heavy brush on and then lightly wiped off. I have another tile with black iron and gerstley borate that may stay on better. I'm going to fire that to ^6 to see the difference. June Perry has a great test page on ^10 oxide washes for reduction if you are interested in color washes for the wood kiln. You could probably just google it or email her. She is the queen of testing! Thanks everyone for following along with my trials and tribulations, I love the comments!!! Great to hear from all of you :)
