No Words Needed

Gerry in Charlotte covering Tiger Woods. This man has been shooting some sort of sport- basketball, hockey, Olympics, and golf since last September. Let him up, he's had enough! One day off tomorrow and then it's off to Darlington for the race there. It never ends. I'm really glad our society is obsessed with sports so he has a job, but really people, couldn't we all just support good documentary journalism and interesting stories instead?

OK, Tracey ... so when I was writing features for Gannett News Service, I wrote two stories that illustrate your point. (I wrote hundreds, but these are just the relevant two.) First, I traveled to Atlanta for the funeral of a young actor who died of AIDS. I wrote about his life, how it connected with other people, how the disease affected everyone, the broader story, the trend in celebratory AIDS funeral services. Then, a couple of months later, I wrote a story about a guy who brought fossilized dinosaur feces to the US from Brazil to sell as a Christmas gift. Guess which one got the most use by the discerning editors of Gannett newspapers.

Oh I'm sure the feces was popular! Don't get me started on editors :)
