Not included

Aren't these letters fun to get?! I knew when I read that Jen Mecca had not been accepted for the 500 Vases my letter was soon to follow. If her work didn't get in, there was no way mine would! Oh well, this was the first book I have sent images to and I have another group of pics in for the 500 Raku book submission, so we'll see how that goes.
In other news, I am working on more box barns. I wanted to get more of them done yesterday but it is so moist outside, my clay is way too wet for slab work on these. I dropped one of the slabs for the roof and just left all the marks and cracks that were made. When I was at Shakori Jeff Martin and I were talking about how they should just be really rough and look old and weathered so there ya go, just drop a slab or two and it's all good.
Saturday at Saxapahaw, one of the potters there had a truck bed full of these slipcast ceramic molds. Most were way to kitch, turkeys and bunnies and teddy bears, but there was this cabbage bowl that looked fun so I took it and made a couple of bowls yesterday. I'll probably never make more than these two because I will forget I have the mold and get distracted with something else, but they are sort of fun to do. Maybe I can get at least a set of 6 before I move on....

Love your boxes and the roughness of them. What clay do you use for them? With my church I had frost porcelain, but it isn't easy to work with for slabs.

Hey, I like the cabbage bowls, nice texture on them, can't wait to see them glazed. I keep telling myself I'll make a set of something, now that I'm settled again I might try to do that. I see lots of ads for molds around here, but I only want plain ones and I cant' get anyone to tell me if they have them, they just want to sell the whole lot and they are way too heavy to take them all, one of these days though.

Oh I meant to say sorry about the rejection, since I haven't submitted I haven't felt the rejection, but it's one of my goals for this year. I think both your and Jen's should have been accepted and definitely your raku.

Feel your rejection pain sister, sorry. I thought the NOT INCLUDED was from a packing slip for some kiln parts -haha!! LOVE the cabbage bowls -how fun are those?!!

Inclusion in a show or book is fun, rejection not so much. But it almost literally means nothing, except maybe that particular juror just wasn't into what you sent. With another juror you might be on the cover. When the book of pottery barns comes out, you'll have ten photos in there.

I do own a couple of the 500 book series, but there is only a handful out of the 500 that I personally admire. My guess is that many of these publishers are influenced by the newly graduated ceramic style. I really have no appreciation for the porcelain bleeding goat head floating over Mars type crap. So in my opinion that declination letter is really a compliment.
I adore your work and Jen's too!!

You guys are very kind. The vase I submitted was one of the first coil vases I ever made and had a run of luck with pipenburg raku glaze on it. It was a nice vase and it sold at an auction for over $100 so all is not lost. Not really sad about it, I didn't expect too much knowing who the judge was. I'm sure the more well established, better known, and MFA grads were selected, and rightly so. It's all good. I do hope there is a 500 architecturals book one day though! I saw the cover photo, nice piece but odd for a vases book, looks nothing like a vase to me.

I love Dirt KIckers description of the current crop of ceramic crap being produced! It IS hard to describem you just have to string together some incongruous images and you will be spot on. I always like to say "knife wielding, bright red pig standind on a strawberry bulldozer" to describe the current work. This work, in my view, is ironic (boring) cynical (boring) and easy to do - just BE SHOCKING, or make people scratch their heads, and you are a a genius. Bullshit.
Keep making Tracey, as we all must, and we can let folks know that ceramics isn't all impenetrable ego strking social crit. It is about form, line, beauty, craftsman (sic) ship.
Better luck to you for next time.
Bullshit.
Did I say that already?

Oh, Linda, almost forgot, the clay is Raku clay. I really like it for sculpture. Cindy and Astro, I completely agree with you about the shock rock pottery coming at us these days. Look what has happened to Ceramics Monthly magazine, that's almost all you ever see in there, I haven't subscribed in two years. Give me simplicity and a well formed pot any day! As I said, I really can't tell that the "vase" on the cover of 500 vases is really a vase. No offense to the creator, it is a lovely piece, but if it represents more of what is in the book, no one I know will be in there.
