Sleepy Creek

It has been raining and gloomy here for the past two days, and I have sat for hours at my computer trying to find us a place to go for our vacation. This year will be our 25th anniversary and we have been looking at France, Amsterdam, the Virgin Islands, Hawaii, and on and on. The thing is finding a flight to any of these places sucks! You either have to take a red eye, or get up at 4am to find anything affordable. Not to mention all the hassle of air travel in general, then when you get there you have to get a car, check in, try to figure out where to go, blah blah. Then there is the dog.... In my 20's and into my 30's I was on a plane almost every week and I have traveled a lot. My idea of a nice vacation does not include all of this travel hassle anymore. Not to mention all the travel Gerry has been doing lately. He just needs a quiet rest. I want to go somewhere and sit and watch the world slowly pass by, Gerry wants to fly fish and Wesley wants to write. I have been to all of the lower 48 states and I have to say one of my favorites is still North Carolina. We have the coast, the barrier islands, and the beautiful mountains. It's funny to be looking all over the world for a travel destination and then end up three hours from our house, but, today I found Sleepy Creek cabin. Doesn't that sound like heaven!? It's in the NC mountains near Boone, secluded, on a creek with a porch and rocking chairs. This is more like it. I'm just not into world travel anymore apparently. I didn't know this about myself until I started planning. I do want to go to France so I think I will just have Judy Shreve be my travel agent when I'm ready and she can plan the trip for me. I'll pay you Judy!

Sleepy Creek sounds perfect! Air travel is completely annoying! When we landed in Atlanta - after flying for 9 hours & figuring the 6 hour time difference -- it still took two more hours to get through customs. YIKES we were grumpy!

So I would be happy to plan a French vacation for you -- no charge. You just have to stay long enough so that you forget about the hassle of your flight there before you fly home.

Judy, next year! We think it would be nice to take Wes to Europe when she graduates High School, or Nepal.....

We went to the Virgin Islands 2 months ago and had to drive 4.5 hrs to Atlanta to get a reasonable fare. On the way back home, we landed near midnight and were so tired, we slept in the car for a couple of hours. I'm way too old for that!
If you come to Boone, you're awefully close to Penland and some of us up here. Wouldn't it be relaxing to visit studios?

That looks like a great place to sit and do nothing.
Plus there are great artist to visit in that area.
We love going to Blowing Rock and doing a lot of nothing.
Water Falls- if there has been lots of rain- water falls is all I have to say- there are lots of them in the NC mountains and I have not seen them all.
Post below:
And you are so right that nothing is new.
I am always amazed at the point where you think you are doing something new and then- you look over and someone else is doing something -like it- but not like it.
Don't give them up!
Yours are wonderful and worth more exploration!

Kari, I think a pottery studio tour vacation is just the thing! We were thinking of St. John USVI since that is where we spent our honeymoon, but air travel is just the worst right now. Meredith, we have seen lots of those waterfalls, Gerry used to even ice climb on one of them up on the parkway, but we have not even skimmed the surface, seeing all of them. We will be near the New River and haven't paddled that in years so I'm hoping for a canoe trip one day, lots of gallery shopping, maybe see Jeff Martin when we are in the area......so much to do in our own backyard, who needs world travel!

Paul, if I start hearing banjo music, other than Bela Fleck, we are packing up! Tig, I remember that post and had the very same thoughts as you, I like your newest sandal soap too! One of these days I'm going to order a bunch of it!
