God Bless Our Farmers!

SATURDAY!! My favorite day! I was at the Farmer's Market in Carrboro by 8am, the sun was doing that pretty early morning thing that it does, shining on all of the veggies and flowers, and did you feel it? There was that tiny little hint that fall would be on the way soon! I shot some pretty pictures before (of course) my camera batteries died. so on to the shopping. I went a bit off path today and bought some different things, oh I got the usual squash, okra, watermelon, corn, tomatoes, blueberries, but today there were apples and pears and figs, oh my! And I got some spring wildflower honey and a bunch of beautiful flowers, some oatmeal raisin cookies with flaxseed for the ride home and a cinnamon roll for my child who has a bread/sweet tooth.
Also got some butter beans and purple hull beans that are so cool, when you cook them the water turns this amazing purple color, if only there was a glaze like that....
I loved this guys set up, quick and dirty, back up the old VW van, set up a nice little table and sell your wares. Shouldn't everyone's life be like this?!
I read this somewhere recently:
"Foods high in added sugars and fats are often more affordable than fresher, healthier choices. Not coincidentally, U.S. consumers are now eating many more added sugars and fats than is healthy. The reason these unhealthy foods tend to be less expensive than foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables has much to do with U.S. agricultural policy. Policies aimed at driving down the price of commodities like corn and soybeans make added sugars and fats some of the cheapest food substances to produce. Support for fruits and vegetables, on the other hand, has been lacking."
grrrrrrr...............
Not only have I cut our food bill per month by shopping only for fresh fruits and veggies, we feel better and we have even noticed that we don't take out as much trash. We take the trash container to the street every Thursday for pick up and there was nothing in there this Thursday to take out! It is affordable to buy fresh fruits and vegetables if you leave out the twinkies and all the processed foods that tempt you in the grocery stores. Plus I have noticed recently that the grocery store smells weird, I don't like it, I am very sensitive to odors. At the Farmer's Market you smell the hay that they put down on the ground, the melons, the corn husks, the fresh flowers, the home made soaps, the breads, it's intoxicating! By local when you can people and stop supporting High Fructose Corn Syrup!!! ( I realize that I am preaching to the choir here, but it feels good to get it out!) Thanks for indulging me. The kiln is cooking and I am off to shuck a dozen ears of corn for the freezer and make some pizza dough for tonight's pizza. Gerry is shooting ECU football practice today and Wes is writing. Our neighbor has a new rooster that is learning to crow and I am sitting here listening to the hens in the yard mock him. Too funny!
Happy Days ya'll!!

There you go making us think again!I haven't blogged in two weeks because I'm still thinking about your support the artists rant and wanting to write something about the courage it takes for people to live by inspiration and perspiration without a safety net.So far it's mostly thinking and not much writing and now I'm thinking about the farmers too.

Rant on Dennis! I would love to read your thoughts on inspiration and perspiration since that seems to be my M.O. these days! God love the farmers, they are working harder than any of us!

ang, I saw that Jamie episode! I was totally addicted to that show when it was on. I used to get up early on Saturdays to watch his cooking show om the Food Network and they moved it and now I don't think it's on. I actually emailed the Food Network to tell them to leave his shows on Saturdays!

I hear ya Tracey! we try really hard to eat local, buy local, and we don't do packaged goods when we can avoid it. Its tough sometimes, I like buying from the farmers, and growing food myself. it just tastes better. But Canadian Ag policy is geared toward the big box farm, and the little guys are forced underground. Its getting harder and harder eat local. But we plow on doing the best we can

I only hit the Farmer's Market yesterday for some fresh flowers for my booth, but I have my CSA share of fingerling potatoes, eggplant, basil, lettuce and more waiting for me.
