Remains of the Day

Don't you love that phrase? The remains of the day...... there is a time here in the late afternoon when the sun is just about to set completely, the sky is golden through our living room windows and everything is very still, I love that moment of the day, the remains of the day. Anyway, Wesley and I just uncurled from the sofa after watching that movie. Probably the most still and calm I have been since Thanksgiving. This turned into a crazy stressful holiday, that kicked off on Thanksgiving day when I cooked dinner for 14 of Gerry's family and it didn't let up until this afternoon. Gerry had 10 days off and was sick every single one of them, Wesley had a fever for days, and I just moved around doing something for everyone, going to Charlotte on Christmas day and just back today from my mom's at the beach. I hate to say this, much as I depend on some of that cash from holiday shoppers, but I am really starting to hate what retail has caused Christmas to become, and I am very close to stepping off the Christmas train. For example, I spent half the money I have saved for the building I want for my studio buying gifts for other people that really don't need anything. My step father gave us __$$, a lot of money, well I probably spent that much on gifts for him and my mom, so he basically just gave me that money back, WTF is the POINT?!? We stopped on the way home to look at a building I want and had I not bought gifts for everyone, I could have handed them cash today and had that sucker delivered next week. Instead, I can give them half and then finance the rest. I find that this really sucks in my mind! Scrooge, grinch, yes.....and this year is about to become all about ME!
You see those dirty fingernails in the photo? Well, they have not been that dirty in over a month and it is time! Monday morning, please stay out of my way, I am getting back to WORK!! I have to, I have a trunk show Jan 15 and there is nothing in my trunk, well.... never mind....
So to all of you, here's to an amazing 2011. I have been catching up with all of your blogs, so many since I left town, I am reading but not commenting much, sorry, I am just chatted out and sooooo tired. Rest tomorrow before I get back at it. Hope everyone had a good January 1. I can't wait to see what all of you do this year. Oh, one more thing... I wrote a brief blog about this but then took it down, I think a few of you saw it, but it wasn't saying what I wanted to say that day, anyway in the post I mentioned the intangible gift that Wesley asked for, jeez, only my child would ask for intangible gifts, love her. So I met this wonderful woman that I do believe is the most intuitive person I have ever met and she reads Tarot cards. So next week, Wesley and I are going to see her and have our cards read. How exciting!!!! I can't wait, I have never done anything like this and have always wanted to. I will let you know what we find out, so stay tuned!!!

No, not a "Grinch" mentality. I say rational and practical.

I noticed the dirt right away. :)

Caregiving is what we must do sometimes. Best wishes of health and much creativity in this New YEar!

Yes, Tracey, we're starting the 2011 movement: The "All About Me" Year!!! Looking forward to hearing about the tarot reading. Fun!

A couple years ago we got the family to agree to stop buying each other (the adults) things. We pledge to spend time together as our mutual gifts. It has relieved a ton of stress and created some nice traditions around getting together.

Cheers to dedicating 2011 to self-care!!!

hi tracey, that's the whole holiday thing that i'm always complaining about... but today is jan. 2nd, one of the best days of the year because it's the beginning of a stretch of not-holidays. totally agree and totally fed up long ago trying to figure out what to buy everyone that needs nothing.

You were supposed to give out pots filled with good chocolaty what-not.
Take care and have fun Tracey.

Well, here is Mrs Scrooge, in person. I won the campaign to eleminate gifts between adults a few years back--not easy, its a hard battle. And I have not overcome the guilt feelings yet. But I believe it is right. Until this year I've hosted a gathering Christmas Eve (and usually Thanksgiving, too) and consider that my gift--getting all the family together (14 to 22 people at a time). We don't 'need' anything (my son Ben laughed at me when I said that this year--gifts are not about need) and we are all overstuffed with stuff. But how to say 'love' if not wrapped in shiny paper? I am not a creative shopper or gift selector which plays heavily into my resistance to the stuff thing. I share your frustration--got rid of the gift giving but not the guilt feelings.

john died 12 days before christmas... he had been bed ridden since the end of October. obviously i wasn't out christmas shopping and after he died i tried to go to the mall but i just couldn't do it. what i learned from that is, that we still had a nice christmas without all the gifts. ever since then i have only bought a few things for the people closest to me. no stress, no malls and happier holidays.
Happy New Year to you and your family!

Happy New Year Tracey.
I think the coming year will be a great one and hey- owning 1/2 a building is better then not owning any building!
I can't wait to see what you do with that building!
