Black, White and Color

Blogger Scott Garrett sent me some pics today, which I promptly accidentally deleted, of the present day fishing huts in Hastings Sussex in the above photo which I had to google. These barns were in a photo I found and posted a few blog posts ago and the white barn from yesterday was inspired by them. Now I want to make a whole cluster of them in black. These fishing huts were used by the fisherman to hang their nets. If you google Hastings fishing huts you can read all about them. I love love love them and want to make lots of them!!!
These were the buildings I was used to seeing as a child and I wonder if I have subconsiously been finding them in my mind. They were slave quarters in the south and there were some like this that I used to go play in as a child near Georgetown SC. It's a sad reminder of a very bad time in our country, but somehow I find these houses so dignified and warm and welcoming. I think the spirits of those that lived in them stay there and maybe those people made the best of a horrible situation and made their homes, as tragic as they were, a safe place for their souls. I hope so anyway. I love the quiet dignity of them, even though I dispise what they represent. I would like to make a group of these and somehow reference them as slave quarters but I wonder if it would be disrespectful to people that have slavery in their history. Sometimes I feel like such a stupid white girl.
and then I nearly hyperventilated today when I came across these colorful things. I can't remember what I was searching for, but these popped up out of the blue and I am longing for Amaco velvet underglazes. Oh please, someone, stop me!!!!!!

I just read the other post on all of your barns from yesterday -they are all sooooo cool. I'm so glad you've been zapped again ;o)

Tracey, If you haven't already, check out Lester Walker's book THE TINY BOOK OF TINY HOUSES. I think you'll get some great ideas for upcoming architectural sculpture. I LOVE your surfaces. They so well match the mood of the photographs that inspire the work.

Hey Nick, I think I saw that book the other day, but we were in a rush and I didn't take time to look at it that well. I'll have to go back to the bookstore! Thanks :) I am liking my surfaces right now too. It has taken a year of test tiles to get here, whew!

Hey Ang, I think for all the color I would have to do a new form, I agree, I wouldn't want that color on the ones I have now. Maybe little beach cabanas? I'll never find time to do this anyway, enough going on as it is! But I love all that color, yum!

hey M, I liked the other "great" spelling, it was fun trying to pronounce it :)
endless testing is what this could lead to with all those colors, sigh...
