End of summer reading

We have a great used book store here called Nice Price Books. I picked up these two for $6. They have some wonderful art books and from time to time I find some great old pottery books. For some reason I am knocking out the books this summer. I'm sure many of you probably know about Sue Bender and her books, but I am late to the party. I read about her book Everyday Sacred the other day on someone's blog and I have that on order. I did find her first book, Plain and Simple at Nice Price though. She was writing her books when I was a new mom and probably couldn't have even found my way to the adult section in the book store, much less found the time to actually read a book that didn't include wizards and dragons and deer and abc's.  I am happy to have found her though, much wisdom in her writing.

This book was a fun find at Barnes and Noble. It's just crazy reading. Sort of a Harry Potter meets Ripley's Believe it or not.
I really enjoyed it, such a creative tale of fantastic impossibilities. It took me two nights to finish it, I just couldn't put it down. I bought it mostly for the cover photo of this little girl levitating. I once did props for a play about two magicians, and in one of the acts, there was a levitation scene. It was so cool to learn a few of the tricks magician's use. Wesley came with me to rehearsals every day and she made friends with one of the magicians who was known to not like kids and never allowed them to be pulled from the audience for participation. He did like Wes though and used her as a plant in the audienc during one of the shows. He taught her two very cool illusions and she did a magic show for the family one Thanksgiving. Some days I miss that job so much. Imagine getting up and going to work watching actors do their thing all day and finding crazy props for them to use. And you get to bring your kid with you and then she becomes a film student. Ahhh, the good old days before I found dirt!

I think you'll love Everyday Sacred. I keep on giving away my copy! Must replace it and read it again.

I have not read anything by Sue Bender...will be checking her out! The peculiar children book would have grabbed me too. I am just finishing up Icy Sparks about a young girl in Kentucky who has tourettes in the 1950's - loving it! Books are such great friends :)

Kathy, you are so right, books are great friends. My mom gave me the love of books and lucky for me I passed that love to my daughter. I have not embraced the ebooks though, I like to hold a book in my hand. Maybe someday.....
