Not your typical beach trip

Wesley and I spent this past week at my mom's house in Myrtle Beach. A visit to MB for most people is all about sitting on the beach all day, eating good seafood and going out to a local bar at night.
Oh no, not me. We did manage to get to the beach one day, but mostly we sat around at the house, on the screened porch or by the pool, slept, read and talked. It was nice.
Except for the drone of motorcycles. Memorial Day week is Black Biker Week at Myrtle Beach. Thousands of bikers come to town for the bike rally and it is a sight to see. It's pretty insane, but sort of interesting to be in the middle of it. Wes and I rode up to North Myrtle one day and cruised by Hooters to check out all the bikes, what a party!
We needed a bit of an escape from the noise so we went to one of my favorite nearby places, Huntington Beach. Atalaya is there. I used to play amongst the ruins of Atalaya as a kid and I have some very fond memories of this place. Thank goodness there are people with the presence of mind working to preserve this historic home. You can read more about it here at Atalaya wiki

This was the indoor/outdoor studio space for sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington. Can you imagine working in a studio like this? Outside behind the left wall are stables where she kept animals she was sculpting, for reference. She also kept monkeys and macaws there. Nice.....

It was mostly a peaceful week. I love my mom's pool. I could get very used to a life where you get up, go sit by the pool and read all day.....
I got my mom one of these cute knitting looms for her birthday and taught her how to use it while we were there. Guess who ended up doing most of the work? I was obsessed with it. I will be going to get one for myself next week. It will be fun to have for travel.
Yesterday I was at the Farmers Market in Saxapahaw, pretty good crowd, not great sales.
Gerry is shooting the Memorial Day Nascar races in Charlotte and I have a bisque to unload. The barn for Woods School survived, now to stain it and get it ready for it's new home, yippee!
Have a great week!

What a great way to spend the weekend....I have never been to Myrtle...Greg's favorite is Hilton Head and we rarely even get there! Ha!

Bike week. Somehow, I've never had the urge to ride in close formation with a bunch of drunken idiots that I don't know.I think you and Wes had a better idea.

Ummmm....My brothers live in Laconia, N.H. Need I say more about bikes?

That is an amazing studio space....and a place for animals too....some artists lived very differently back then. Glad to hear it's getting some care.

Lounging by the pool is a great way to spend time and your mother's is so pretty.

I was planning on first swim this weekend as the water temp was 74 last monday. Today after five days of rain it's down to 64. Ouch!

I have considered those looms. WIth your recommendation maybe I'll use a coupon and pick one up also.
My folks lived in Myrtle for about 5 years and loved it there and I remember my Dad telling tales of biker weekend.

Hey Anna, Hilton Head is way nicer than MB, I always feel like I am in Las Vegas when I go see my mom, just with an ocean
Dennis, bike week is the craziest thing ever. I remember when I was a little girl, we would ride down the boulevard to see the Harley bikers all lined up, so weird, but sort of cool in an odd way...
Hey Suzi, yeah the weather got cold here again too, nice to have slipped in that warm week at the beach, and yes what a dream studio!
Suzan, the loom is awesome, I couldn't put it down, and it is not that expensive, go for it!

Fantastic photos. They really look like an exotic getaway to me :)

Atalaya, what an amazing place. And, I would SO love a studio space just like that. Sigh.

Hope you and Wes feel rested and relaxed after what looks like a wonderful week :)

wow, the pictures show it was a beautiful getaway, despite the noise. if saxapahaw was closer, I'd come visit. Still hoping to meet you at some point and I do want a pendant!

Sounds like a wonderful way to spend some down time. I LOVE the photo of the old faucet, the patina is amazing and you captured it so well.
and being from NH, I know what Smartcat means about bike week in Laconia... crazy times. I always tried to avoid the Lakes Region that weekend.

Hey Michele, yeah the faucet was so cool, thanks to aging in the sea air, I suppose. Unfortunately this was the only week we had time to get down to visit my mom, it seems like it always works out that way.
