Another photojournalist gone

We woke up this morning to an email on Gerry's iphone that his colleague, AP photographer Anja Niedringhaus had been killed in Afghanistan. Gerry worked with her at the Vancouver Olympics and was quite honored to be included in that staff of really amazing and award winning photojournalists. I'm sure if you listen to NPR you have heard the news today about her and reporter Kathy Gannon. Our prayers are with all their families today...........

This is the fifth photographer that Gerry has worked with in the past ten years that has died recently, only one of them dying in retirement and enjoying a good life after the news business. The others died while doing what they loved best, shooting great photographs. It is a hard business to stay alive in!

It was with great sadness that I read this story about Anja from the Washington Post, well worth a visit to see her amazing photography. This was a horrible and senseless killing. Why have so many lost all sense of respect for human life?

Very sad and sobering - makes you really understand the danger that photographers and reporters face to bring us news of the world. The fact that they are so vulnerable should make us appreciate the information and images they provide.
Sorry for your loss, as I imagine the AP reporters to be somewhat of a family.

I hadn't heard about this over here, so I looked it up online.
Incredibly sad.
So very senseless, tragic and very frightening.
It's hard to have hope for the future of this world when incidents like this happen. Shocking. Where's the humanity?

I read many wonderful and sad tributes to her today.
Then I read my recent Nature Conservancy magazine and thought..If only we did what we are capable of and made this world wonderful., and all lived to be decent and kind.

I immediately thought of you and Gerry when I saw this yesterday. Such a cruel and senseless act

I heard the news while listening to NPR in the studio. Right away I thought Gerry had probably worked with her. So sad. My thought are with you.

Like Dennis, I thought of you and Gerry when I heard this on NPR. It's not only the loss of a fine photographer, but the horrifying, cold blooded manner in which the murder was done!

When I heard about this on NPR I thought about you both. They said in the article that she also did sports photography so I wondered if she and Gerry had ever worked together.

So sad and pointless. Hugs to you both.
