D.I.Y

I'm working on a holiday display for the store at home today. Instead of the cliche red and green, glitter and sparkle (which I still love in the right context), I'm using burlap and chalkboard paint with black and white color scheme and some green for accent. The tables will be covered in the burlap and all of our DIY kits and tools and things will be displayed in some festive way, some on this plant stand. I want it to have a seasonal feel, but in keeping with a garden store that sells hydroponics and homebrew. We have a certain customer that doesn't do glitter and gold, if you know what I mean.

Sybil came in from the cold to help me. Do any of you bring your chickens in the house for a visit? I love that I can bring a dang live chicken in my house if I get in the mood for it!

I also love that I found a job that lets me get my visual merchandising fix, something I have been missing for way too long. And I get to make prop things, another obsession and I get to work with nice young, smart people and beautiful plants. How did this happen!?

I used to bring my chicks in when they were little but not the adults. I was also raising meat hens so I didn't want to get attached to them.
I am thinking that you already deserve a promotion and a raise at your new job! You are going to be increasing their sales this holiday season.

What breed is Sybil? She's my favorite chicken to draw on pots. :)

Hi Michele, yes a raise please! There is talk of new stores and growth including more employee income, so maybe one of these days....
Anna, She is a barred rock, sometimes called a Plymouth rock. Very hardy breed and one of the sweetest. They love to climb up in my lap and cluck about their day :-)

I have been following your blog for a long time; we are also potters here in Washington. I think this job is a sign of what you want and have been moving toward.. craft, art, creativity, but . some people, money.. some challenges,a broader canvas, using all your talents. it seems like the right direction. Maybe pottery built to be sold there, maybe more functional less art; maybe creating environments; all in all your journey seems so heart felt and earned,.As you let go of this and this and this; you seem to gain this and this and this.
I wish you all the best of work and art. Joan Tucker

For a minute I was thinking it was “bring your chicken to work day.”

Oh Joan! You made my day, what a nice thing to read this morning. I do feel like I just got a prize for all my hard work, haha! It's like a gift, this job. I look forward to going, I look forward to seeing my co workers, and I am proud of the changes I have made to the store, and they are appreciated. I can without a doubt say I have paid my dues, haha!
Thank you for your kind post
Xo

Lori, wouldn't that be a new twist?! I wonder how my manager would feel about Sybil coming in to work with me, haha! She is always welcome to come to work with me in the house though:-)

It's such a blessing working where you love to work. 3 winters now at FIREKILLER and I wish I could be there every day. My boss is also now a close friend and we whistle while we work and gossip about life.. :D
Good for you!

I used to leave my back door open in the country and my chickens would come in to investigate. Betty and Suzanne would stay a while as Eugene (their handsome husband) kept watch in the doorway.
I'm so very happy all is going well for you, Tracey. The Universe has responded :)
