IS MY SMART METER MAKING ME SICK? MONSANTO PROTECTION ACT?!?!?

At 3am this morning I woke up with the most incredible headache. Not the normal sinus feeling headache, but more like someone was slamming my head against a brick wall. This has happened a few times recently. I also have tingling in my right arm, insomnia, heart palpitations, and joint pain. Wesley has also complained of headaches, fatigue, tinnitus, Gerry has had several recent episodes of vertigo. All symptoms of exposure to the radiation being emitted by the smart meter that was unknowingly attached to my house, right beneath our bedrooms. We have now planted a garden directly under this smart meter. Is our food going to be radio active? Is this meter causing all of these mysterious ailments?
We have been to doctors about these symptoms, nothing shows up, I was attributing my problems to being 50, but I think not, I am really beginning to wonder.....

So, this morning I called Progress Energy and asked to have it removed. They told me I did not have a choice, I either have the smart meter, that is emitting radiation into my house and my garden, or I live without electricity.
WAIT A MINUTE!!!!!!!!! I HAVE NO CHOICE!!!!!!!!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!?!?!?!?!?!?

I have been online all morning reading faqs about smart meters. I urge you to do the same. It's scary shit. Our country is a scary place right now. I know there are a lot of conspiracy theorists out there, but they aren't all wrong. Let's talk about Monsanto, fracking our Earth, GMO's, drug ads pushing pills for everything, this planet is becoming a toxic wasteland, and I feel powerless to do anything about it. Just like Progress Energy, they have me by the balls, radiation sickness or electricity, your choice.... hmmmm.

I really don't know what to do. I feel helpless, outraged, victimized, and I just want to scream. Yesterday was bad enough when I read that our president just signed bill HR 933. This bill basically states that federal courts cannot intervene or halt biotech companies, ie: MONSANTO, from planting and selling genetically modified goods to the public, EVEN IF TESTING PROVES THEM TO BE HAZARDOUS TO OUR HEALTH. This bill shields companies like Monsanto from litigation, much like an earlier bill shields the drug companies from being held liable for harm they cause. This bill is being dubbed the MONSANTO PROTECTION ACT,  and guess what else?
MEMBERS OF CONGRESS ARE NOW SAYING THAT THEY DIDN"T KNOW WHAT THEY WERE SIGNING! IMAGINE THAT!!!!!!
go read about it.

WHAT IS GOING ON PEOPLE?!?!?!  HOW DO WE STOP THIS MADNESS?!?!?!?

I urge you to google smart meters and read about them. If any of you know how I can fight this, please let me know. I am sitting here reading symptoms of radiation exposure and brain tumors and have convinced myself I am in trouble!!!!! I want a better world, I want a government that isn't all about corporate greed, I want safe food, safe water, a healthy planet, why is this so much to ask for?

Maybe I can just take a little purple pill........

The idea of "going off the grid" is looking more and more appealing, isn't it. Crazy stuff... and I agree that one of the most frustrating things about it is the feeling that we have no control over any of it. Since (apparently) having the smart meter removed is not an option, maybe you could request that they move it to a more remote area of your property. You might also have your house tested for radiation. There is a type of naturally occurring radiation called radon that comes up through some homes through the ground, and can cause serious health issues, from what I understand. Fortunately they have test kits that you can buy at just about any of the major hardware stores. That's certainly worth looking into. Also, you might see if you could borrow a Geiger counter from someone and find out just how much, if any, radiation is coming into your home from the smart meter. Best of luck, Tracey. Peace.

Tracey, I feel the same way. It's horrendous how our politicians have sold us out for money and power. If they didn't know, then they can easily take that right away in another bill - easy to do; but the problem is that we allow this legal corruption of our politicians.
Go on line and see if there's some lead shield or similar that you can wrap around that smart meter to keep that radiation from going anywhere else.
Also get your house tested for radon. It's a big problem in some areas; and there's something than can be done to correct that.

Naturally occurring radon is far more of a risk than the kind of radiation emitted from a smart meter. If you are worried about smart meters, then you better give up your cellphone, which is constantly emitting electromagnetic radiation, and any wireless equipment you have in your house (same thing), and maybe move to a lot where your neighbors' signals don't reach your house. Or their cellphones, for that matter. And so on. Back to radon, a genuine threat, don't move to the mountains, tho, much more risky for radon, it is naturally emitted by certain rock formations. Please forgive my extreme skepticism, but the more information I see on a particular topic on the internet that is couched in alarming terms, the less I trust it.

I hadn't heard about concerns of smart meters so I had to look it up. I think I tend to agree with ME Garde's comment, especially about the radon concern. Although you may have had your house tested when you bought it.
This link seemed to have some good and reasonable information: http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/othercarcinogens/athome/smart-meters

Here in Maine we can pay an additional charge every month to have the meter removed and a real person come to read it.

Is it possible that you can move your bedroom to another place in your house until you can work something else out?

If you read all the reports of people that got sick after the smart meter was installed in their homes you would see my concern, all of this seems tto have started after the meter showed up. I don't think this has anything to do with radon....
I'm just saying.... The main point here is the power company told me I don't have ANY CHOICE, that's what really bothers me. What if it really is causing me to be sick, and I don't have a choice. That is just WRONG

Tracey Broome said...

Also, the bedroom can't be moved, I just want the option of saying no if I don't want this meter that I didn't even know I had. We called the power company last year and asked if we had a smart meter and they told us no, they lied.
I rarely use a cell phone and I don't own a microwave, my choice, let me choose whether or not I want a smart meter attached on a home that I OWN.

I swear I'm putting up razor wire and digging a fucking moat! We still have a meter reader but they are trying to put these things in! We are so screwed by the corporations..... I wonder if they really thought this out because if they kill us off who will pay their salaries?

Sandy, I think I love you

It's the same over here.
Smart Meters have been "rolled out" over the past two years. Ours was installed without notice.
Only the power companies are touting them as a "good thing".

Never had dizzy spells, until recently.
Maybe coincidence, maybe not.

See Vicki! That's what I'm talking about. I never had headaches like I'm having, tingling hand, it's the meter, I would bet anything!

Hey Meredith and Trish, read up! And thanks Trish, they are getting better! Ps: sorry I was out of town when your friend came through, did she have fun?

You could have them move the meter (extend it out from the house). You will have to pay for the work but its an option.

Tracey Broome said...

Good point Mike, a possible compromise since I don't seem to have a choice of what to do with my own home.....

Tracey, this may be a solution: http://www.earthcalm.com/emf-dangers/smart-meter-health/?gclid=CIm3g7X9r7YCFeN_QgodYRoAsw\

What I found interesting is that they said that some company's just arent using the guidelines for these things which may account for some people getting the headaches, dizziness, etc. etc. from the radiation.

I have had two smart meters in my house one since 2000 for my water, and the second I had put in in 2007,so I could get lower electricity rates to fire my kiln at night.
The smart meter for power is right outside our bedroom, about twelve feet from the bed.
Both my wife and I feel fine.
Who are "they" that you keep referring to? "They" say that "some companies just aren't using the guidelines?"
What is the basis for their statements?
As someone that works with radiation on a daily basis, I can assure you that there is no radioactivity coming from any smart meter - there is no need for a radioactive isotope of any kind in the meter. It is, basically, a multimeter, a little fancier certainly, but like one you can buy at Radio Shack. All it does is measure voltage and amps, and calculate power (power = voltage X amperes) so the company can tell how much juice you are using at any given time. If they do this to all users, they can use energy more efficiently, and save money through power, material, and personnel management. That's why I can get electricity for $0.02 a kWh some nights.
If you want to know what does have radioactivity in it, look at your smoke detectors, they have either Polonium or, more likely, Americium in them. Is it enough to harm you? Not at all.
As far as radiation, it might be emitting radio frequency levels of energy, but so what? Your cell phone emits much more, if you have a cordless phone, it uses radio, if you have anything with Bluetooth, it uses radio, a wireless router, in fact, your electric lights are emitting a radio frequency. None of these are what is called ionizing radiation, that is, waves or particles which have enough energy to knock electrons off of atoms, and create ions, which, as free radicals, might be implicated in cancer. That's why they are safe - you and everybody else on this planet have been bathing on radio frequency radiation since you were born, it doesn't mean our ills are a result of that.
It is more likely that the company is not using radio at all, as the info they need can be sent right up the wire back to their generating facility, using a carrier current system; in which case it emits few radio waves.
How many people got the idea that companies are out to kill everyone is beyond me - now everyone thinks they are Erin Brockovitch, except that she did her homework and continues to, and doesn't seem to base her efforts on hearsay and conspiracy theories.
As far as you aches and pains - you know after I turned fifty, I began to have many unusual pains, aches and stuff that I didn't have when younger, I guess it just comes with age.
You often have many valid points, and I agree with many of them, but on this one, I think more research is called for.
I also checked the text of HR 933, sec 735, and I couldn't make out where it said that Monsanto or any other company can do whatever they want, and the government or courts have no recourse, but then I'm not a lawyer. Maybe it does say that, but then mistakes have been made on the Internet before...

You know, we're kind of screwed, we want inexpensive energy. But it seems the only way to get that is at a higher cost. If the power company told you they could remove it but you'd have to pay a livable wage to someone to come out and read the meter we'd be complaining about that. We need a better solution but even that costs research, development and installation money. Maybe it's time for solar panels and wind turbines except they come with their own set of problems. Can they move the smart meter? Can you move your bedroom?

Thanks, Kevin. Good explanation of RF and why it isn't the monster in the closet like people fear.

Tracey - heating season is almost over, but tragedy doesn't care about dates. GET YOUR FURNACE INSPECTED. These are classic symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. If you're all-electric, my bad. Could be the gas water heater, could be a partially clogged chimney. But, it is definitely not the meter. For you to experience any of those problems, equipment would have to be specially constructed, and a whole lot of power beamed specifically at your house. Rather like a very large microwave oven. I feel for you, because I suffer from migraines almost daily, but that's genetics. If you are worried about ionizing radiation, which obviously you are, try to find someone in the area with a geiger counter. I have a civil defence meter, but I haven't tested it and I'd rather not mail it out.

I used to test for radon as part of home inspections, and aside from potentially causing cancer, neither the gas nor the radiation from it will cause your symptoms. It takes a very very sensitive instrument to even test for radon. I have to filter a measured quantity of air across a known filter, and then expose the filter to a detector for several hours to get a meaningful number usually in picoCuries.

This isn't going to make me very popular, but the Monsanto legislation was needed because of what the lawyers gleefully call frivolous litigation. The only people who benefit from these lawsuits are the lawyers. It ties up the company for a long time and costs millions or more, usually because someone didn't understand something. It isn't just for Monsanto, but for every company that potentially makes a product that benefits us. Whether you realise it or not, you've been eating GMO plants and animals since you were born - well, we all have beginning with the first attempt at animal husbandry. Thousands of years ago. Carrots, for instance, used to be purple. Potatoes were originally the size of walnuts. Plant breeding increased the size of the tuber, but it traded off blight resistance. So much so that it was responsible for the Irish famine that reportedly millions perished in. They've (the small farmer from the ancient past) successfully cross-bred plants to produce hybrids - pollinate the pea with corn pollen, as ex. (non-viable experiment, but it is an illustration). Pollen from the melon family is notorious for crossing over into other plants.

Anyway, please get your furnace inspected as an *emergency* measure. If I'm wrong, well - it does need to be done yearly anyway. I'll happily be wrong, but I want you safe. You can recover from carbon monoxide poisoning, but not if you're no longer breathing.

we got our wireless smart meter 5 months ago...I was also worried about it but my BA Physics hubby - who knows MUCH about radiofrequency has inspected it and said it´s safe. The data transmission takes as long as 1-2 seconds per month, otherwise it´s less hazardous to our health than watching tv:) Our device was made in Finland.

Hey June, I checked out these products, very interesting, also very expensive, but I loved them
Hey Kevin, I'm writing another post to answer your HR933 question, I'm still not convinced the meter is safe.....
Hey Lori, we are investigating solar panels and getting off corporate food and energy dependence as much as possible, I just can't stand it!
Dennis, we have a carbon detector, just had the furnace serviced as we do every year, not the problem, we have no mold,we have no radon. We have a smart meter that I am not so sure is what I want.....my complaint with the legislation is that representatives are now saying they didn't know what they were signing, WTF?!
Sissy, glad you are safe, I have read story after story of people that really don't feel that safe, who knows what to believe, ugh!
